Merchants & Marine Bank breaks ground for new location in Hattiesburg

Founded more than 120 years ago, Merchants & Marine Bank has more than 15 locations throughout Mississippi and Alabama—but until recently, Hattiesburg only had a temporary location on Mayfair Road.

That all changed on August 12 with official groundbreaking for an upcoming permanent location at 4607 Hardy Street, located next to Scrubs N More on the site of a former grocery store.

“We are very excited; we can’t wait,” said Grant Walker, market president of Pine Belt at Merchants & Marine Bank. “We have been active in Hattiesburg (about two years) and currently have a full service office in the (temporary) premises.

“This will give us more space, give us a drive-through service and it looks more like a bank. People are still a bit perplexed when walking around our existing place.”

Since September 2020 the bank has operated from its temporary location at Millbranch Office Park on Mayfair Road. Once the Hardy Street location is complete, which is expected to be next summer, staff will move there from the temporary location.

“Having a permanent home in Hattiesburg has really been our goal all along,” Walker said. “It only took us a minute to find a seat.

“We definitely looked at different things and had to choose a contractor, so it all ends up speaking a little longer.”

Construction is being carried out by Mac’s Construction Company of Hattiesburg.

“We got bids and they got the deal,” Walker said. “I think they probably plan to start within the next couple of weeks and it will take about a year.

“Hopefully we can be there by the end of August next year.”

The new location will offer a full-service branch, with a staff of rental companies and the previously mentioned drive-through facility.

“We will have walk-in and drive-through counters and a full staff to open and service accounts – deposit accounts,” Walker said. “There will be seven to ten employees, that would be our initial plan.

“And then we also have a community workspace. We have an active internship program and it seems like now that we are headquartered in Pascagoula it is common for people to come to Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg is a good, easy halfway location for a lot of things and so we will have some office space available for our people who can come into the office temporarily to do some kind of work that are not permanent residents.”

The Merchants & Marine Bank was officially incorporated in 1899. In late December 1931, with the United States mired in the Great Depression, she formally recapitalized the bank and put her money back into the organization.

The bank offers personal banking, business banking, digital and mobile banking, personal loans, business loans, CDs and IRAs, and financial advisors.

“We’re just a full-service community bank,” Walker said. “We have a very capable commercial lending team and I would say if there is one specialty it would be serving small, medium and larger businesses in Hattiesburg.

“But of course we also offer private and individual accounts, consumer credit and all of these things – the classic banking services, so to speak.”
