Major blaze as 130 firefighters battle a blaze at a commercial estate

A major fire has destroyed a business park on Earl Road in Cheadle.

The inferno at the Armadillo Self Storage Unit, which began at 1am Saturday morning, is being fought by 130 firefighters from stations in Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The fire, which has reached extreme temperatures, has been described as “challenging” and difficult and will take well into the morning to bring under control.

It is one of two major fires being fought in Manchester this morning. The latest updates on these two incidents can be found here

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Dave Russell said partnering agencies, including United Utilities, have been working hard to contain the bonfire.

He said more than 40% of the building was destroyed.

He said: “I am the chief incident officer of a major fire at a commercial building.

“We got a call just before 1am. The building is one storey, approximately 150 by 100 meters in size and is used as a warehouse. It’s a major brand, a really well established brand.

“Approximately 40 percent of the building is affected. It is a significant incident in terms of our resources. We have over 25 pieces of equipment here, including special equipment, so that’s in the order of 130 firefighters.

He added: “It’s going to be a protracted incident. We’ll be dealing with it well into the morning. We have really good support from our partner agencies, notably Greater Manchester Police. NWAS and also United Utilities who support us as part of the water strategy. With a view to bringing significant amounts of water onto the incident.”
