SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — So many Californians are grappling with skyrocketing housing costs, and on Wednesday state officials unveiled ambitious new plans to build millions of new homes.
Currently, the average cost of buying a home is over $800,000.

Now the state of California is setting new residential building requirements to alleviate the housing shortage, but how many new homes are needed?
“The state needs to add at least 2.5 million new homes, and that’s the bare minimum,” one apartment said.
This target must be achieved by 2030, and at least one million of that must be dedicated to low-income families.
A growing way that communities are creating new housing is by building so-called “granny flats” or “tiny homes” on existing residential lots.
These types of new units, which are cheaper to build and often don’t require special permits, have increased tenfold.

To boost construction, the state plans to spend more than $6 billion on housing projects this year.
Cities and counties are required by law to approve a certain number of low-income housing units as part of their development plans, and those who fail to meet the targets can now face legal consequences.
“The court can impose a fine of $10,000 per month or up to $100,000 per month for long periods of noncompliance,” said a housing attorney.
Housing advocates say immediate action must be taken to help people struggling to find housing.
“We don’t want to see people on the street. We don’t want to see the tent cities. We don’t want this crisis to just get way, way out of control,” said one advocate.

The state has also created a new housing accountability entity to hold local governments accountable for their low-income housing obligations.
